Alessio Picariello is a Belgian racing driver who has experiences in both formula cars and GT cars. He won the title in Audi R8 LMS Cup in 2017 and China GT Championship in 2018. This year's Suzuka 10 Hours is going to be the second challenge for him with AUDI Team Hitotsuyama. He has competed in Suzuka 10 Hours in 2017 and finished P8. How tough and challenging is the second Suzuka 10 Hours going to be for Picariello?
I drive Mercedes for Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia, and I know I will be racing in the different car, which will be AUDI, in Suzuka 10 Hours, but I don't think the difference between the two cars are going to be a problem as this is not the first time for me to switch from Mercedes to AUDI.
I know the condition is going to be tough in Suzuka, but I am not really worried. Because I have done the race last year and it was hot, but we tried to be prepared and trained for it, so I suppose it will be OK. I don't have any concerns toward Suzuka. I just want to be competitive.
To be honest, it went pretty well for us last year. We were fighting for the top five for a long time in the race, so I think this year, podium finish may be possible. It could be tough because we are not with a factory car, but I think we have an excellent lineup and good potential in the team to be able to finish on the podium this year.
I have not raced in Suzuka in Super GT car, but I know the big difference will be the tires. Pirelli tires would be slower in one lap, but as the window is wider, you have more room to play. In Suzuka 10 Hours, because we all have the same tires, many factors are going to be important. It could be the settings of the car, drivers, or of course the pressure of the tires.
I have already raced in Suzuka this year in BGTA, and I love the track. This is my favorite circuit in Asia. I always enjoy to be there, and I usually have had pretty good results there. It is a pleasure to race in Suzuka.
